Guide Description

This guide is designed to meet the first four benchmarks of standard 11.5 by tracing the development of housing designs, and by analyzing interior designs and furnishings during various historical eras by examining photographs and documents pertaining to Minnesota architecture. These documents will provide clues to the societal and technological trends of the eras, particularly in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

7: Search Strategy

Things to Think About

This guide includes architectural styles and interiors/furnishings of houses and living spaces – additional resources are available for architectural styles and interiors/furnishings of businesses and churches.

Keywords

Architecture, sod house, birchbark, home interiors, furnishings, Pantown

Other ideas (to assist with discovery)

A topic such as floor plan leads to an entire book on a St. Paul Housing Project in 1933-35, and furniture leads to interesting information such as rules and living conditions in dorms at Winona and SCSU. Searching individual room terms such as kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, living room, dining room, and parlor, will provide additional written and visual sources.

Challenges to finding resources on this standard

Many pictures are available depicting the exterior of houses, businesses, and churches throughout Minnesota from mid-1800 - 1920. The search of architecture was limited to central MN and the search for home interiors and furnishings was from the entire collection. The biggest challenge was in finding examples from later periods – see website at end of guide.

9: Specific Minnesota Reflections Collection(s) to Consider (optional)

Since this guide focused on central Minnesota, The Stearns History Museum was the major collection used for photographs.

10: Helpful Tips (optional)

Although this guide uses homes as the basis of architectural design, there are many pictures depicting the exterior of businesses and churches throughout Minnesota from mid-1800 - 1920. In addition, there are interior pictures with furnishings from schools, university dorm rooms, hospitals, and the Minneapolis YWCA.

11: Ideas for Lesson Plans Using this Guide (optional)

Students could compare/contrast different building materials and house styles.

Students could identify prominent furnishings in homes and analyze the significance of the items in relation to the technology or the social trends of the period. For example, several photographs of parlors include pianos and the advertisement lists a store that sells pianos. Students could discuss why the piano was so prominent in homes and the role that the piano fulfilled in society. They could then compare/contrast the piano with forms of entertainment in homes today.
