Guide Description

Students could begin their exploration of the Great Depression and World War II by viewing the multitude of photographs/newspaper articles/etc. about Minnesotans who lived during these decades. The photographs of women in the workforce help students visualize how women's roles changed. Also, the photographs of various training sites will develop a greater appreciation for the role Minnesota played in getting ready for U.S. participation in WWII. The newspaper resource documents efforts to ensure the survival of a public library during the Great Depression. The Indian Wardship report in 1930 provides insight into ways the U.S. government might be trying to save money by making Indians independent. The Historical Skills (Historical Inquiry) and the Speaking, Viewing, Listening and Media Literacy standard could be matched with the social studies standard to create a service-learning project for this era or future eras in U.S. history using Minnesota Reflections and community veterans/family members/citizens.

10: Helpful Tips (optional)

Students could demonstrate their understanding of the Great Depression and WWII as described by Minnesotans (using primary source documents/oral histories/etc.) who lived through the Great Depression; served/worked/lived during WWII; and rebuilt postwar world.

11: Ideas for Lesson Plans Using this Guide (optional)

To help students make connections to current history, the newspaper article could be used to facilitate student understanding of the support individuals gave to save libraries during the Great Depression and to current efforts during our recent recession and legislative cuts to programs. Additionally, the report on Indian Wardship is thought provoking when considering treaties, fishing rights, casinos/gaming that have traditionally been reserved for Native Americans but are revisited during recessions and government budget issues.
