Things to Think About |
How in-depth am I looking to get? How many different Minnesotans do I want my students to research? These are important questions, because some famous Minnesotans in this collection will have more info online than others. Additionally, students need to understand that these people might be famous in non-traditional ways (They aren't all movie stars or athletes). |

Other ideas (to assist with discovery) |
Famous Minnesotans is the key collection to this guide. |

Challenges to finding resources on this standard |
Famous Minnesotans (See Browse by Topic from Minnesota Reflections homepage) is a great collection, but to many teachers and students, the famous Minnesotans tend to be more obscure. Additionally, teachers may want to check the site beforehand, so that they can create a list of people that would make good research topics. Otherwise, it can be tedious for the students to find a suitable subject. |

10: Helpful Tips (optional)
|
It will be helpful, and a timesaver, to have a list of potential research subjects ready. This would be especially helpful for students who are overwhelmed by searching the site, or for students that need modifications made. Additionally, depending on your time constraints, having a list ready will speed up the process.
This list above isn't a full list. It's a starting point. |
11: Ideas for Lesson Plans Using this Guide (optional)
|
The beauty of the "Famous Minnesotans" collection in Minnesota Reflections is the amazing pictures. The pictures are fantastic, much better than you'll find in just a Google search. Take the time to zoom in on the pictures. The clarity is mind-blowing. Students should love to see pictures that don't get blurry when they zoom in. This is great for keynote/PowerPoint presentations. At the same time, they would fit really well in basic Word/Pages documents.
Additionally, this collection is great because it focuses on Minnesotans. It gives students a chance to look at some famous Minnesotans and get to learn a little bit more about them, and it does it better than just a Google search of "Famous Minnesotans" would. Students can search the pictures, find ones that interest them, and then do a Google search of the person's name to find additional background information.
As mentioned above, this isn't a stand-alone site for research. While the pictures are phenomenal, background information is sparse. If you're planning on having the students do any sort of accompanying research, you'll need to have a list of Wikipedia pages or other websites ready to go. |
