7: Search Strategy

Things to Think About

Do I want my students to focus on our geographic area, or do I want them to focus on an area/region of the state with which they are less familiar? Do I want the whole class to focus on the same specific topic (i.e. Excelsior Amusement Park). Do I want to students to focus on the same types of photos (buildings vs nature)? Or do I want everyone to search from the same collection? How much research am I expecting from my students?

Keywords

Clay County, Excelsior Amusement Park, or your hometown, etc.

Other ideas (to assist with discovery)

Browsing by collection is a great way to find pictures related to your hometown (or at least county) as many county historical societies have donated many photos. For example, Clay County Historical Society is great for anyone wanting to see photos from Moorhead.

9: Specific Minnesota Reflections Collection(s) to Consider (optional)

Clay County Historical Society

10: Helpful Tips (optional)

Living and teaching in Moorhead makes the collection an interesting one for me, but not necessarily for others. However, I put it in as an idea for a potential local collection. You could replace Clay County with your county to find local pictures.

11: Ideas for Lesson Plans Using this Guide (optional)

The photos above are a great starting points, but certainly not ending points. They are examples of photos that students might find interesting, photos and topics that will lead the students to do further research. Their research could focus on the specific item in the photo, like the J. B Bassett, or it could focus on steamboats in America during the 19th century. If you are keeping your research local, finding pictures that have personal connections with the students might be a good idea. An example of this could be Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. You might have students that attend the church. The student has a connection to the place, making it likely that they would be interested in doing a short research project about it. Wikipedia might be helpful as a site students can use to find additional information about their topic and you probably wouldn't have to worry too much about inappropriate content on that site.
