Guide Description

This guide will allow students to explore the impact of various religious groups on the development of Minnesota. Students will be able to site specific examples that show the impact of religious groups on the state. This guide is written for grade 3, but would also enhance grade 6, Minnesota History instruction.

This is a picture of St. Mary's Institute Hospital. This hospital was commissioned by the Catholic Bishop of the St. Cloud Diocese to help with the numerous patients as a result of a flu epidemic. The control of the spread of disease was an important function provided by early hospitals.

After a devastating tornado ripped through Rochester, Catholic Sisters of St. Francis built a hospital to serve the sick and injured, with the agreement William Worrall Mayo provide care for the patients. The hospital became part of the Mayo Clinic system.
